WORK EXPERIENCE AT ENSEMBLE THEATRE

Ensemble Theatre can accommodate high school work experience during the year within our production schedule. Please submit a cover letter outlining the dates of your work experience week, your skills, experience and interests in the theatre and we will check whether that week fits into our schedule. Currently, 2016 work experience opportunities are full.

SUBMITTING SCRIPTS

Ensemble Theatre is passionate about supporting Australian writing.

Twice a year we open for submissions via our Ensemble Stages program, choosing one script for a public reading and feedback session at Ensemble Theatre. We follow up with a meeting to offer the playwright our own feedback and discuss what might be the next development of the play.

The nuts and bolts:

  • One play per playwright will be accepted per submission round.
  • Preferred Cast size: 1-7.
  • Preferred Play length: Between 45 – 120 minutes (excluding interval).
  • Due to the nature of the program in supporting new work, plays that have received a public read in the past or have been previously produced are ineligible for an Ensemble Stages read. However, we can still consider them for our main season. Please provide details of any previous productions or public readings with your submission.
  • Submissions open in Spring and Autumn of each year. Keep an eye on our website and social media for updates.

Some tips to consider: 

  • Make it easy to read: florid font, illustrations, excessive punctuation makes for difficult reading and distances us from the actual story. Keep your pages clean: a plain, un-bolded font is all you need.
  • Make your intro short and snappy. Don’t spend the first several pages explaining your script. We appreciate the work you’ve put into themes, messages, style, symbolism, characterisations and journeys, but we want to get straight into it. Give us the bare minimum we need as a starting point, then let us dive right in.
  • Don’t overdo the unspoken text. By all means include stage directions, but be selective. Keep them concise, only include what is vital to keep the story flowing.

We can only accept unsolicited scripts through our Ensemble Stages program. Keep an eye out on our news feed and social media networks for announcements of the next submission intake. Due to the large number of scripts received, we unfortunately cannot provide specific feedback on your submission. For a written assessment of your work, you can utilise the script assessment services provided by the Australian Writers’ Guild.
