Play 3

Joanna Murray-Smith writes: “Many of us are trying to lead multiple lives: child, mother, wife, lover, star, giving small doses of oxygen to each and imploding under the weight of so many competing roles. The women I have written in BOMBSHELLS struggle – sometimes hilariously, sometimes tragically – to bridge the chasm between the wilderness of their inner worlds and the demands of their outer worlds. And humour, in the end, is our saviour.”

When BOMBSHELLS played in London, The Guardian commented, “As observant as anything in Alan Bennett’s TALKING HEADS - and considerably less static ... Beautifully judged in the mixture of comedy and depression.”

I’m so looking forward to BOMBSHELLS. I’m blessed with the casting – Sharon is a real triple threat, a singer, dancer, actor extraordinaire. She also has another hidden weapon – her chameleon like ability to become different characters entirely. It’ll be great fun doing it, and I know you’ll all love it. DIRECTOR SANDRA BATES

"The audience was quick to its feet to salute Sharon Millerchip for bringing six very different characters to convincing life. Millerchip (Chicago, Love Never Dies) is triple-threat incarnate, and she brings her skill set to bear on all aspects of the show. Her dancing (the never-say-die Mary improvising to Isaac Hayes’s Shaft) is fun. Her singing (as Zoe drunkenly searches for her low notes) is terrific. Best of all though is her straight acting. Theresa is pure Norton Street, and her frazzled Meryl is a pin-sharp portrait of cascading anxiety. The highlight of the evening is the quietest character study and the most poignant, in which the 64-year-old Winsome experiences an unexpected reconnection with her dormant sexual self."  JASON BLAKE, EIGHT NIGHTS A WEEK   READ MORE

"Sharon Millerchip is SENSATIONAL in Bombshells. Her 6 women so utterly different yet so real. Hard to believe it's one actor" Tweeted by JO LITSON

"My experiences so far as a theatre-goer have developed for me something of an understanding of what makes a performer great. They have to have phenomenal timing, devastating instincts, but most importantly of all, they have to be pretty well fearless in the face of risk. This sense of fearlessness makes them resolute and dangerous on stage. Following last night’s performance in the Ensemble Theatre’s present revival of Joanna Murray-Smith’s exquisite play Bombshells, it is safe to say that there are few performers working in Australia today who are more dangerous than Sharon Millerchip.... Sharon Millerchip’s performance is proof that, realistically, the search for the next ‘once in a lifetime’ leading lady ended years ago. Millerchip has been with us all along....Millerchip’s performance in Bombshells is a powerful achievement by a dangerous performer in her prime. It can only be hoped this magnificent production and its star can make it to other theatres around the country. Something this spectacularly well done should not be contained. Get to the Ensemble while you can!" DAVID ALLEN, AUSSIETHEATRE.COM   READ MORE

"In Sharon Millerchip...the Ensemble certainly has a gold plated hit on it's hands... the audience immediately jumped to it's feet for Millerchip.  Quite right too"  Deborah Jones  READ MORE

"One of the best plays I have seen, see Bombshells - TWICE!  Bombshells’ is dynamite, ripping inside women’s lives, exploding with vivaciousness, realism, hilarity, wit, music, dancing on an underlying seam of ‘quiet desperation’...Sharon Millerchip, the multi-talented award winning actor is extraordinary. Her energy, versatility and ability to change persona quickly, takes the audience on the journeys of these diverse women.  ‘Bombshells’ deserves to have huge success. Sharon Millerchip is outstanding, captivating and truly one of Australia’s great actors.  Rating: 5 stars plus  SUSANNE GERVAY'S BLOG   READ MORE
