THE GINGERBREAD LADY
has all the ingredients that make for theatre at its best - recognisable characters who take us on a high stakes journey, where we ride with them through the fun times and the tough times. We laugh with them, we cry with them, but most of all we care about them.

Evy Meara [Kate Raison] is a cabaret singer just returned from rehab to be met by her long-time friends and daughter Polly. What ensues is warm, witty, heartbreaking and life affirming.

"Ensemble has a 53 year history – in that 53 years we've occasionally done a play twice because it's been such a good play. Well, for the first time ever, we are doing a play for the third time."
DIRECTOR SANDRA BATES

Kate Raison does a sterling job channelling the darkly funny yet ultimately tragic alcoholism of cabaret star Evy Meara…It’s an engaging and entertaining piece of theatre which shows us that the nature of addiction is, sadly, universal.” Daily Telegraph

A crowd pleaser…fiendishly funny and very likeable…top notch cast.” Northside Courier

Kate Raison gifts Evy with peppery humour and sensuality” Sydney Morning Herald

some truly great comic scenes…the language and characters are as vibrant and compelling today as they originally were” Media-Culture

“a deliciously witty, warm and eventually life affirming play about love, the solidarity of friendship and mother/daughter relationships…Kate Raison is brilliant; alternately sober, witty and caring or embarrassingly drunk…As Jimmy, who suffers slings and arrows of outraged fortune in a terrible Broadway show, Lord is fabulous…The exquisite, beautifully elegant Carter gives a magnificent performance as Toby…As Evy’s daughter Polly, Kellie Clarke is excellent, just right as the feisty but caring 17 year old…Adriano Cappelletta is great in the double role of uppity delivery boy Manuel and Latin stud Lou, Evy’s ex…A serious yet extremely witty examination of some thought-provoking issues.” Arts Hub

Kate Raison is compelling as Evy Meara…Kellie Clarke has a strong stage presence…Carter plays the vain self-absorbed Toby with excellent pace and immaculate timing…Lord’s depiction of Jimmy’s real concern for Evy is touching, going beyond the words in his script…Adriano Cappelletta is cheeky as Manuel and nasty and manipulative as Tanner…funny and appealing and fast.” Stage Whispers
